About the Author

Welcome to edifice ref! My name is Beatrice Pulliam and I am a reference librarian at Providence College (PC)’s Phillips Memorial Library. PC is a private, Catholic liberal arts college in Providence, Rhode Island. I received a Master of Science in Library & Information Science from Simmons College in May 2004 and began working at the college last November. I am a refugee from the corporate world (with the heart of the liberal arts undergrad I once was) and this is my first professional gig as a librarian. I’m borrowing the following term from the Blended Librarian folks, but that is how I’d classify myself: a mix of reference, instruction, web and library techie stuff, liaison duties (let’s see, to date: Engineering-Physics-Systems, Theatre-Dance-Film, Black Studies & Asian Studies), and let’s not forget committee work.

The Blog

As I hope the title tag hints, I will blog primarily about my frontline experiences in reference, library technology, as well as making libraries more user-friendly (the pesky findability factor). Disclaimer: The views and opinions expressed in this blog are my own and do not reflect those of my employer.

As I am pretty active professionally, the blog will also periodically include relevant conference reports and professional development announcements. I created this blog using Wordpress without too much distress (thank you WP Codex) and a very clean two column theme originally designed by Theron Parlin. Proper credit appears in the blog footer. This particular theme was not XHTML Transitional compliant, so I have a little more work to do on the blog’s innards before I can proudly display the validator. I hope to hack the original theme a little bit more to add a third column to list book’s I’ve read recently, etc. For now, I will have to express my undying gratitude to Zeldman’s Designing With Web Standards here. It’s just an awesome read and tool for anyone wanting to be a better coder/web designer. I laughed out loud several times as I was reading it in my neighborhood’s artisan bakery/coffeehouse.
