Discovering Rhode Island

The spammers have finally gotten around to my blog and to them I say: $@#%!! Today is the first day of my “Discovering Rhode Island” vacation. I will be looking for the hidden treasures of my new home state through July 4th. Self-imposed unplugging should also give my “L” key finger the time it needs to heal. I’ve identified some cool sounding walking and rambling books as well as the requisite AMC guide, so my first stop will actually be the main branch of the Providence Public Library. See you back here after Independence Day.

Back to the basics: LC Red Books

A transformer (perhaps more than one) blew on my campus last Tueday and the college closed for one full day, and was without an internet connection for another full day. Remember what life was like before the Internet and WebOPACs? Well, I did for a split second. A student came in looking for a book on writing business surveys. After a quick check in the Reference section, I pulled the Strauss book and the HBS Library’s core collection book to identify titles. Unarmed with a card catalog, I grabbed the LC Subject Heading Red Books to help me locate any useful books in the circulating collection. Information source books like Strauss and HBS Core don’t typically have call numbers, but a book like HBS may tell you if something circulates or not. (more…)

Funny thing happened on the way to NELIG

I was really looking forward to the annual NELIG conference this morning. This year’s theme is “Making Learning Meaningful: Getting to the Heart of the Student”. If you’re there, I’d love to read your notes. Apologies for the upcoming graphic nature of this post: After a tire malfunction that kept me from getting to Portland (ME) last evening, I had the misfortune of getting the tip of my ring finger chewed up pretty nicely by the garage door at 6am this morning. According to the ER doctor (who btw bore a striking resemblence to comedian Steven Wright), it’s pretty “macerated” (thus, impossible to suture). I’ve only previously heard that used in relation to cooking with fruit, so that’s all kinds of gross. Luckily, the chunk of my finger missing is all skin, so it will grow back beautifully (according to Dr. Steven Wright) in time. (more…)
